Two coin silver spoons, marked “S Ayres Lex K.” Samuel Ayres is one of Kentucky’s earliest
silversmiths. He began working in
Lexington in 1786 and continued in that city until 1823 when he moved to
Danville for one more year of operation of a shop. The form of these spoons indicate a date of
manufacture of about 1815.
The spoons measure 5¾ inches in length and are in excellent
condition except for some minor dents in the bowls. There is a script monogram of “LM.”
