Watercolor, circa 1890, by Maria Howard Weeden of
Huntsville, Alabama, of the Church of the Nativity at twilight. The following verse appears below the
building, “Softly now the light of day Fades upon my sight away; - ” A “Howard Weeden moon” appears to the left of
the church steeple. This watercolor was
formerly owned by Sophie Lowe Young who resided at 600 Franklin Street. Several of Sophie’s ancestors were early
settlers of Huntsville, including Dr. James Manning, his wife Sophia Providence
Thompson Manning, General Bartley Lowe and his wife, Sarah Sophia Manning Lowe,
whose paintings by John Grimes all are on display at the Weeden House Museum.
On the back of the watercolor appears the following two
inscriptions: “‘A happy Christmas to
you.’ (signed) Shelby W. Walker” and “The Church of the Nativity – painted by
Miss Howard Weeden.”
