Watercolor, circa 1890, by Maria Howard Weeden of Huntsville, Alabama, of the Church of the Nativity at twilight.  The following verse appears below the building, “Softly now the light of day Fades upon my sight away; - ”  A “Howard Weeden moon” appears to the left of the church steeple.  This watercolor was formerly owned by Sophie Lowe Young who resided at 600 Franklin Street.  Several of Sophie’s ancestors were early settlers of Huntsville, including Dr. James Manning, his wife Sophia Providence Thompson Manning, General Bartley Lowe and his wife, Sarah Sophia Manning Lowe, whose paintings by John Grimes all are on display at the Weeden House Museum.

On the back of the watercolor appears the following two inscriptions:  “‘A happy Christmas to you.’ (signed) Shelby W. Walker” and “The Church of the Nativity – painted by Miss Howard Weeden.”

Additional information about Maria Howard Weeden can be obtained from the Weeden House Museum located at 300 Gates Avenue, S.E., Huntsville, Alabama.  At least one similar watercolor of Nativity is in the Weeden House collection.
