Item 1361

Clarinda, Georgia sampler by Sarah Gaston, age ten, dated 1828.  According to the Swallow/Defur Family home page, Sarah Jane Gaston was born in 1818 as the second child of Matthew Gaston, Jr., who was born in 1785 in Rowan, North Carolina, and Mary Gaston.  

The alphabet appears twice with different lettering.  Then the sampler reads as follows:

Sarah Gaston s Sampler
Wrought in the 10.th year of her age.  CAB 1828..1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10.
N.C Clarinda, Ga.        

The sampler is approximately 10½ inches wide by 7½ inches high.  Generally, the sampler is in good condition but there are four small points where the threads appear to be giving way.   The frame is 18⅞ inches wide and 17 inches high and appears to date to about 1900.  The black matt is relatively new.
